How to Tab a Wood Wick

Start by gathering all the items that you will need.
Materials Needed:
- Wood Wicks
- Tabs
- Scissors
- Flat Nose Pliers
Step 1 - Wick lesson
The wood wick consists of two pieces of wood. The wide, soft piece creates the width of the flame. The narrow, hard piece, called the booster, produces most of the heat.
**Important note: Do not try to separate the two pieces of wood. The wick will not work if they are separated.
Step 2 - Trim one end
Trim the excess soft wood from one end of the wick using scissors. Make sure to cut it at a 90o angle because this will help the wick to stand straight in the tab.
Step 3 - Add the wick tab
Push the tab onto the trimmed end. Postion the tab so that the wider piece of wood is against the 2 prong side and the booster piece is against the single prong.
Step 4 - Adjust the wick
The wick should stand straight by itself when setting on a level surface. It is easiest to adjust the wick before putting it in the container. Make sure the wick is straight in the tab, and make adjustments to it if needed. If necessary, use the flat nosed pliers to help snug the wick tab to the wick. Do not squeeze too tightly or the wood may split and the tab may bow slightly.
Step 5 - Mark the wick
The wick needs trimmed to the correct length before adhering it to the container. Trimming it even with the top of the container will be sufficient. You can trim the wick more precisely once the candle has set. You can use a marker to indicate where you need to cut.
Step 6 - Trim the wick to height
Using scissors. cut the wick to the correct height. After you have trimmed the first wick, you can use it as a template to trim others that you are using in the same type container. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT BOTH PIECES OF WOOD ARE USED AT THE TOP OF THE CANDLE WHERE IT IS LIT. IF YOU AREN'T USING BOTH PIECES, IT WILL NOT LIGHT CORRECTLY AND WILL HAVE PROBLEMS STAYING LIT.
